INDONESIA-GERMAN RENEWABLE ENERGY DAY (RE-Day)
Powering the Islands, Empowering the Community: Renewable Energy for Enhanced Productivity

Welcome Message by BMZM
Keynote Speech by DG EBTKE & GIZ IDN Energy Programme

Detail

Detail Agenda

The Day Indonesian-German Renewable Energy (RE-Day) is a biannual event that brings together key players from the government and private sector to move the development of Renewable Energy (RE) in Indonesia forward. It is organized by the “1000 Islands – Renewable Energy for Electricity Programme” (REEP), in close cooperation with the Directorate General of New Renewable Energy and Energy Conservation (EBTKE), German Embassy, German Chamber of Commerce, as well as public and private sector corporations.

The previous RE-Days were held in 2018, 2019, and 2021, each attended by more than 300 participants. The feedback was overwhelmingly positive, as a networking platform to share successes in RE upscaling in Indonesia, and for strengthening cooperation between the Indonesian and German renewable energy key players. This year, the RE-Day 2023 – “Powering the Islands, Empowering the Community: Renewable Energy for Enhanced Productivity” will be held as part of the Indonesia Sustainable Energy Week (ISEW) 2023, with the aim to provide insights on how government support (regulation), private sector contribution (funding and CSR) and implementation of innovative RE technology could answer challenges faced by communities in rural area.

Detail Agenda

When fossil fuels are burned, they release large amounts of greenhouse gas especially carbon dioxide into the air and In 2018, 89% of global emissions came from fossil fuels and industry. High consumption of fossil fuels could result in the depletion of ozone which ended up to climate change and other environmental issues. The energy transition towards sustainable and renewable energy sources to combat climate change and achieve net zero emissions pursues the development of advanced technologies with higher efficiency, cost-effectiveness, and scalability to revolutionize the way of generating, storing, and even utilizing those clean energies. The rapid progress in the development of renewable energy technologies in the last decade shows their potential is achievable and the technologies themselves will always be enhanced. In 2022, Indonesia ranks 75th among 132 economies featured in the Global Innovation Index (GII) and performs better compared to previous years.

To delve into more insight, ExploRE and CASE will be organizing a discussion session for participants with the theme “Emerging Technologies”. The sessions will bring together the results from series ET discussions that will discussed critically by experts with diverse perspectives on emerging technologies.  it is expected to explore and gain a deeper engagement about the further technologies as well as the development of related technologies in Indonesia.

Detail

Detail Agenda

To reach Indonesia’s NDC and NZE commitment, an estimated amount of approximately USD 280 billion until 2030, with the energy sector accounting for the majority of the needed financing, is needed. Public finance alone will not be sufficient to fulfill the financing needs of the measures. It is expected that the majority of total finance should involve the private sector.

Strategically, employing scarce public finance will therefore be key to optimizing finance at scale. The role of public finance will be concentrated on offering specific key instruments to trigger investments by the private sector, or through blended finance. So far investments by the private sector in clean energy projects, are still falling short of what is required to achieve the targeted transformation. This is an indication that the framework condition in Indonesia may not yet offer adequate security to private-sector investment and guarantee a risk-appropriate return. Moreover, in the framework of the green economy that unites a variety of different fields (environment, development, labor, business) to outline an inclusive vision through the energy transition, a positive investment decision has to be based on a stringent illustration of key economic facts and if possible quantifiable indicators of the political, technical, and economic risks (e.g. internalization of environmental externalities, shifting subsidies and market distortion, etc.) and articulates the green economic paradigm.

To contribute to finding better approaches and solutions on how to lay out the economic opportunity inherent in the energy transition for a green economy, as well as to optimize public finance and private investments in clean energy development, the ISEW 2023 will discuss it through the session: “Accelerating Finance and Investment to Support Energy Transition and Achieving Green Economy in Indonesia: How to Minimize Investment Risks and Optimize Investment Flows?”
